Zach: A Life Transformed

In the spring of 2004, Zach was at a low point in his life. He had been suspended from school for stealing and kicked out of his house for drug use. Although he had worked at a few fast food restaurants, he spent most of his days drifting aimlessly and playing video games.
Zach learned about ReCycle North’s YouthBuild program from his mom who saw a flyer at the Vermont Department of Labor. Together they decided to check it out. “I was really impressed that YouthBuild wasn’t just school or just work,” recalls Zach. “I liked the variety within the routine -- and the fact that I’d get paid while I was in training.”
Zach signed on in September of 2004. His supervisors recognized his potential immediately. They were impressed with Zach’s construction skills (Zach’s father is a builder) as well as the outdoor skills he demonstrated during a staff camping trip. During the 9-month program, Zach developed reliable work habits and became more focused. “The biggest change I saw in Zach,” notes Westie, “was that he developed a passion for getting up and coming to work every day.”
Zach graduated from ReCycle North’s YouthBuild program in July of 2005. In addition to acquiring new construction skills, he also earned his GED, obtained a drivers license and learned valuable job search skills. Today, Zach is employed as a full-time apprentice electrician for Pinard Electric and is working toward his journeyman license. According to Zach, “YouthBuild totally helped me turn my life around.”
